Mercury Thermostat Program Aimed at Boosting Recycling in Oklahoma

A Covanta Holding Corp. subsidiary is partnering with a state agency and another firm to provide a recycling option for mercury-containing thermostats in Oklahoma.
Citizens and contractors can deliver intact old thermostats to any Locke Supply location for recycling free of charge. Locke Supply, a heating and cooling distributor, is working with Covanta Tulsa Renewable Energy LLC and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) on the project, according to a news release.

Judge sides with city in dispute over $45M Covanta recycling center

Two paper companies and a private citizen who sued the city of Indianapolis over a recycling deal with Covanta lacked legal standing to bring their complaint, a Marion County judge has ruled.
Marion Superior Judge Cynthia Ayers awarded summary judgment in favor of the city in an April 6 ruling.
Graphic Packaging International, Rock-Tenn Converting Company and Cathy Weinmann had hoped to stop the city from proceeding with a contract running through 2028, which guarantees the city’s municipal trash will continue going to Covanta’s Harding Street incinerator.
As part of that deal, Covanta will build a $45 million “advanced recycling facility,” which will pluck plastic, metal and paper out of the garbage.

Lunch, Not Landfill: Nonprofit Rescues Produce Rejected At U.S. Border

Just across the border from Nogales, Ariz., rows of northbound trucks line up for inspection. Over half of the produce that’s grown in Mexico and imported — $4 billion worth — comes through this border crossing. Most gets distributed to all parts of the U.S. and Canada, but some fruits and vegetables get rejected before they leave the city of Nogales.
Yolanda Soto is determined to give that produce a second life, by redirecting it to needy families across the country. She runs Borderlands Food Bank, which rescues between 35 and 40 million pounds of safe, edible fruits and vegetables headed for the landfill each year. That’s about one serving of produce for every child in the U.S.

Landfill fire in Chester County burns on

The fire engines have long since disappeared from the parking lot of the Broad River Mart. With one exception, no evidence remains that the parking lot of this gas station and convenience store on Pinckney Road was the staging area for a weeklong attack on a raging landfill fire last November.
The one exception is smoke from the still-raging fire.
Firefighters from five counties worked for days with state and federal assistance to get the fire in the Bennett Landfill under control five months ago. But an underground seam of debris continues to smolder, with smoke seeping out of the landfill mound and drifting down to the Broad River Mart just outside the gate.

‘I love lamp:’ Anchor lives a real-life Ron Burgundy moment after badmouthing cats

Apparently, camera operator Tom doesn’t take too kindly to news anchors making fun of his love of cats.
Two NBC 26 Green Bay news anchors learned this the hard way while discussing their distaste for cat hair, something that Tom apparently has plenty of.
But quick-acting Tom got back at the anchors, jumping into the script to get even.
