NYS has just passed a law to legalize the use of cannabis and has restricted the ability to manage personnel in this area. Since the 2016-17 opioid epidemic took the lives of nearly 64,000 Americans, all industries are mindful of the risk that substance abuse poses to the workplace, specifically the construction industry. Substance abuse is one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities for construction professionals, resulting in it being a top safety hazard on construction sites. One reason onsite substance abuse can be hard to identify is the lack of understanding of the signs to look for.
This TSCTA’s 4-Hour Substance Abuse Recognition (SAR) course (offered in 2 parts) is developed to support supervisors, managers, and company-wide leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge to recognize the signs/symptoms of drug and alcohol misuse in a work environment.
The SAR course is the first step to ensuring substance abuse remains a non-factor on your projects. This training is recommended for workforce leaders to determine if and/or when an employee may be impaired and then know the necessary steps to take to protect your company and the employee as it relates to specific company drug and alcohol policy compliance and safety.
Participants will learn:
- Drug and Alcohol Use in the Construction Industry – Physical, behavioral and performance cues related to drug and alcohol abuse on the job site
- Reasonable Suspicion Drug and Alcohol Screening – Including: how workplace policies and procedures are affected by legalization of recreational marijuana use in New York
- Defining Reasonable Suspicion and Role of the Supervisor in Identifying Potentially Impaired Employees
- Guidance for Dealing with Employees Suspected to Be Under the Influence – based on real-life examples and scenarios
- Where can we find help? Overview of organizations and programs that assist individuals struggling with substance abuse
