Owens Corning joins asphalt pavement industry’s Net Zero Initiative

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) welcomes Owens Corning to The Road Forward, an industry-wide vision for sustainable communities and commerce. This initiative helps fund ongoing efforts to engage, educate, and empower the U.S. asphalt community, driving forward the milestone of achieving net zero carbon emission asphalt pavements by 2050.

Owens Corning is committed to building a sustainable future through material innovation. With more than 25,000 employees in 31 countries, the Fortune 500 company is making progress toward its sustainability goals. In its 2023 sustainability report, Owens Corning reported achieving a 28% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from a 2018 baseline, bringing it closer to its goal of a 50% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 market-based GHG emissions by 2030.

Headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, Owens Corning joined NAPA as an Associate member in 2022. Senior Engineer Courtney Rice is a member of the Committee for Engineering Application & Practice. Owens Corning is also a member of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA). These memberships underscore the company’s commitment to sustainability. In fact, Owens Corning aims to recycle 2 million tons of shingles annually by 2030, in part by leveraging increased acceptance of balance mix design (BMD) to incorporate more recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) in paving mixtures. Additionally, through collaboration with Earth911, the company has been encouraging contractors to pledge to recycle shingles since 2009.

“We are grateful to Owens Corning for their support of The Road Forward and their continued innovation in sustainable materials and processes,” remarked NAPA President & CEO Audrey Copeland, PhD, PE. “Their commitment to recycling and waste reduction in the asphalt pavement supply chain will advance our collective efforts to reach net zero by 2050.”

The Road Forward brings together the entire U.S. asphalt community to conduct research, implementation, and ongoing education. The Road Forward participants are NAPA members that actively support this work through financial contributions, leadership, and expertise.

New for 2024, NAPA is also offering opportunities for nonprofit organizations, such as likeminded associations, to support the industry-wide effort. Additionally, agencies are invited to join at no cost to bring their voices to this innovation lab.

The new tiered program invites all stakeholders to the table to collectively propel the vision toward net zero. The enrollment period, which occurs annually, is open through August 30. Find your company’s opportunity to support sustainability at AsphaltPavement.org/Forward.
