In Memoriam: Joseph Scalamandre of Peter Scalamandre & Sons

We are saddened to inform you that Joseph Scalamandre (7/17/1934 to 7/29/2020) passed away yesterday at the age of 86. Joe was born and raised in Freeport, NY. He is survived by his son Peter and daughter Jill, daughter-in-law Connie, daughter-in-law Renee, son-in-law Mark, grandson Richie, and granddaughters Nicole, Caroline, Paulette and Allegra. He is predeceased by his son Joe Jr. and wife Carolee. Joe is also survived by his Brother Fred and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was a giant in the construction industry, a friend to all that knew him, a mentor to many, and a father figure to his lifelong employees. In 1959, Joe and his brother Fred took over a small sidewalk company after their father’s sudden passing and built it from the ground up, into the construction conglomerate that it is today. Peter Scalamandre & Sons is one of the most respected construction companies in the NY Metropolitan area with a broad and diverse portfolio of work that includes heavy civil construction, underground utility and concrete work with specialties in all aspects of airport work, and public agency general contracting. Scalamandre is supported by its many affiliated companies including a ready-mix supply, equipment holding company, and a heavy-trucking company.
Mr. Scalamandre’s many accomplishments and charitable donations are too numerous for this page, some of which include “Man of the Year” for many organizations throughout his benevolent, charitable and gracious career.
They say the true character of a man is not defined by what he does in front of a crowd but instead by what he does when no one else is around. An example that best exemplifies Joe’s character is told by one of his employees who found a note in the conference room handwritten by Joe to one of his many Catholic Charities. The note read “Please say a prayer so that I may stay healthy and continue to get work for the many families that rely upon me so that they can be healthy and safe”. This was Joe, always concerned about others, before himself.
Under the current circumstances the Wake for Mr. Scalamandre will be a private ceremony. The funeral will be held at Holy Redeemer Church in Freeport on Mon. August 3, and will be open to the public. Joe’s life will be celebrated at a time and place to be scheduled in the future.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be sent to the De LaSalle High School located Freeport, NY – see link for information https://www.delasalleschool.org/
