It is with great disappointment that we inform you that the 2020 AGC NYS Anthony S. Santaro Golf Classic, benefiting our Scholarship Program and re-scheduled for September 2, 2020, has been canceled.
Since making the decision to pivot to our alternate date in September from our original June date, ongoing and evolving guidance, restrictions and data have made clear that hosting an event our members would recognize and enjoy would be both impossible and imprudent in a number of ways.
We had been working closely with the staff at Turning Stone (Syracuse, NY) to make adjustments to our normal event to conform with the new realities of COVID-19 and the restrictions and policies put in place by the State of New York. The eventual and inescapable conclusion was that it would not be possible to do so in a way that would comply with existing state policies and restrictions, including the NY Forward requirements to which we have all affirmed—potentially exposing both our members and the association to liability and unnecessary risk.
Furthermore, other restrictions in place would have forbidden participants from outside a 120 mile radius (which would encompass significant portions of Western New York, the North Country, Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island) from accessing parts of the property, including the main hotels.
We know that this decision comes as a disappointment to many, as it does to AGC NYS. The tournament is a wonderful tradition that not only brings so many of us together for a fun day, but supports an incredibly worthwhile cause that makes critical investment in the future of our industry through what has become the most successful Scholarship Program of any AGC Chapter in the nation.
In that spirit, we are regrouping to put together a virtual event to allow members to support the Scholarship Program this year—and, yes, even auction off the infamous “Wine, Fruit and Cheese” painting. Please stay tuned for details on that in the coming weeks. We have also made plans with Turning Stone to hold the tournament there again on June 22, 2021.
We look forward to the Golf Classic’s return next year. In the meantime, we hope you will participate in our virtual event. Again, be on the lookout for details on that soon.
Thank you to our members for your overwhelming and continued support of this tournament and your understanding of this difficult but right decision.
